Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve, gazetted in 1976, was established mainly to preserve the habitat for the remaining population (a little over 160) of rare wild water buffaloes.
The reserve extends 175 sq. km. to the north of the one kilometre-long
barrage that spans the Koshi River. The barrage is the best place in
Nepal to see migratory and resident marshland birds. The vast expanse of
the open water created by the barrage, and the marshes, lagoons,
sandbanks, mudflats and arable land that lie around it offer an
outstanding wetland habitat, thus making Koshi Tappu one of the Finest Bird-Watching Sites in Asia.
The most rewarding and regular wildlife outings at the
reserve will be on foot, exploiting the grasslands, river lagoons and
woodlands, and the vicinity of the barrage, a short drive away.
